When it comes right down to it, we are involved in so much more than keeping the lights on. We're also working to make a difference in the lives of Alabamians. We're involved in the development of our communities, the education of our young people, supporting causes our customers feel strongly about and taking care of our elderly, needy and disabled.
We are working to improve the quality of life in our state, to do what is “first good for Alabama,” through different initiatives and efforts.
We offer programs and education to communities and students that teach safety measures, tips and the dangers of electricity.
Our lake operations balance needs ranging from recreation to energy production to habitat protection.
We believe that by serving others in need, we serve ourselves. That is why we are involved in many community service projects to help those in our communities who are in need. A few of our projects are listed below, please click on the links for additional information.
A Considerable Force for Good Works
The Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) includes more than 5,000 Alabama Power, Southern Nuclear and Southern Company Services employees and their families. That's a considerable force for positive works to improve the quality of life in Alabama communities.
APSO is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose members focus their efforts on helping nonprofit groups and charitable projects that promote education, environment and community enhancement and meet critical human needs. From the 10 chapters across the state, APSO members typically donate more than 50,000 volunteer hours to our communities each year.
Retirees Involved in Their Communities
The Energizers group is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization of Alabama Power and Southern Company retirees and spouses who are committed to serving communities across Alabama through charitable programs.
Energizers lend their support to schools, hospitals, libraries and numerous nonprofit organizations. More than 1,200 members work through 11 local chapters across the state. Energizers contribute an average of 40,000 volunteer hours a year.
For more information regarding volunteerism with Alabama Power Company, please contact Charitable Giving (205) 257-2508 or contact us by e-mail: APSO or Energizers.
Alabama Power and the Alabama Power Foundation have created or supported a range of environmental programs and initiatives that help to preserve or improve wildlife habitat, protect endangered species, remove trash from Alabama waterways and plant trees. We have launched internal programs to save energy, recycle and reduce landfill waste and reduce company vehicle emissions. As part of this work, we look forward to growing partnerships with our customers, employees and community groups to safely deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy.
By reducing the number of vehicles on the road, we can improve air quality. Our partnership with CommuteSmart encourages employees to reduce mileage and make driving habit changes that reduce emissions and ground-level ozone. Our employees have reduced vehicle travel by nearly 860,000 miles through carpooling, vanpooling, teleworking, bicycling or walking to work.
Renew Our Rivers is a national award-winning campaign originated by Alabama Power in 2000 that has since grown into community cleanups on rivers, lakes and creeks across four Southeastern states. Since its start, thousands of volunteers have removed more than 13.5 million pounds of trash and debris from waterways. Typically, more than 30 community cleanups take place every year in Alabama.
We are partnering with the Alabama Bass Trail to host student fish habitat workshops and river cleanups. High school students from across the state help assemble fish attraction devices, or FADs, under the supervision of the company’s stewardship team. Students create these FADs from environmentally friendly and naturally occurring materials, which will provide the fish with a safe environment and protection from the sun. During the past decade, Alabama Power and community partnerships have built and deployed more than 56,000 FADs.
Efficiency Forward grants are offered through the Alabama Business Charitable Trust Fund, which was created in 1992 by Alabama Power. The ABC Trust features energy assistance programs for low-income families. The trust also offers a program that helps nonprofit organizations – particularly those in health and human services – save on energy.
Efficiency Forward is designed to help nonprofits reduce their energy costs, so they can devote more of their resources to helping those in need. Since 2007, Efficiency Forward has provided 140 grants totaling more than $1.2 million to help nonprofits save on their energy bills.
