Time is money. You don’t want to waste either, which is why it’s critical you know what you’re paying for when it comes to the fuels and materials you are using at your facility. Our team of lab experts can help. Alabama Power’s General Test Lab was established in 1975. Since then, we have recruited experts with over 400 years of combined experience in the analysis of transformer oils, coal products and byproducts, petroleum, limestone, gypsum and water. The data we provide can be used for regulatory compliance, contract specification verification, asset protection and operational support.
Diagnostic testing of transformer oil enables you to make informed decisions regarding the condition of your transformer and its insulating fluid. The tests we perform are part of routine preventative maintenance and can indicate trouble within the transformer before a major problem occurs. If left untested, you could experience power outages and loss of expensive equipment.

Contaminated petroleum products can result in equipment damage or equipment not operating properly. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that fuel oils, turbine oils and lubricating oils meet specific chemical and physical properties. Oil system contamination may include dirt, rust, water, debris and by-products of the oil degradation process. Regularly scheduled oil analysis can prevent equipment damage and provide trending programs of oil health to prolong the life of equipment.

Monitoring the efficiency of your power plants comes down to ensuring the quality of fuels and materials being used. It’s important to know those fuels and materials are still in the same condition when you first received them. The testing we do on coal, ash, biomass, activated carbon, limestone and gypsum can help you determine how efficiently your plant is operating and anticipate major problems in your equipment. Historical trending is also used to monitor the quality of each sampling location with our data system.
