iCan

We started the iCan program in 2008 to encourage girls in middle school to pursue careers in the field of engineering by sparking their interest in math and science.

iCan Program Facts

iCan cultivates an educational environment that inspires curiosity in STEM and promotes diversity across STEM fields.

  • Over the course of the iCan program history, more than 200 Alabama Power and Southern Company female employees have served as volunteers for the program.
  • We hold activities at our school partners focused on core STEM disciplines.
  • Girls STEM Conference is held each year and is open to all 6th-8th grade girls.
  • Since the program's inception, we have reached over 1000 middle school girls in the Birmingham area.
  • The program has increased female enrollment in area high school engineering academies for Trussville, Hoover, and Spain Park.
  • iCan provides a forum for networking and relationship building for females in STEM.
